MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging)

Your MRI Exam: A Patient Overview

Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) is a noninvasive imaging technique that uses a strong magnetic field and radiofrequency waves to generate highly detailed images of the body’s internal structures. Unlike X-rays or CT scans, MRI does not involve ionizing radiation, making it a preferred choice for evaluating soft tissue conditions involving the brain, spine, joints, and organs.

Before Your MRI Appointment

  • Preparing for Your Exam: Instructions may vary depending on the area being studied. You might be asked to fast, hydrate, or follow specific preparation steps. It’s essential to inform your care provider if you have any implanted medical devices—such as pacemakers, aneurysm clips, cochlear implants, or metal hardware—as these could impact your ability to safely undergo the scan.
  • Appropriate Clothing: Wear loose-fitting clothes without metal components like zippers or buttons. You may be asked to change into a provided gown to avoid any interference from metallic materials.
  • Health Information: Please inform our team of any known allergies or kidney concerns, especially if contrast material may be used during your exam. This helps ensure your safety and allows us to tailor the procedure to your medical needs.

What to Expect During the MRI

  • The Process: You will lie comfortably on a motorized table that slides into the MRI unit—a cylindrical machine designed to surround the body part being scanned. You’ll be asked to remain as still as possible to ensure high-quality images. The technologist will stay in contact with you throughout the exam via intercom.
  • Time Commitment: Most MRI exams last between 15 and 60 minutes, depending on the complexity of the scan and whether contrast is needed.
  • Comfort and Environment: Although the scan is painless, the machine may produce loud tapping or thumping noises. You’ll be offered earplugs or noise-canceling headphones to reduce discomfort. If you experience anxiety or claustrophobia, speak with your provider beforehand—sedation or other accommodations can be arranged when appropriate.

After Your MRI Scan

  • Image Review and Results: A board-certified radiologist will evaluate your MRI images and provide a detailed report to your referring physician. Your doctor will review the findings with you and discuss any next steps in your care.
  • Resuming Activities: Most patients can return to their normal routine immediately following the exam unless otherwise instructed.

Important Safety Information

  • General Safety: MRI is considered a safe imaging method with no known harmful effects from the magnetic or radio waves used during the procedure. However, if contrast is used, there’s a small possibility of an allergic reaction or kidney-related concerns, which is why your medical background is carefully reviewed in advance.
  • Clinical Applications: MRI is particularly effective in evaluating neurological conditions, joint injuries, spinal disorders, tumors, and soft tissue abnormalities. Its superior resolution makes it an invaluable diagnostic tool across a range of specialties.
