Digital X-RAY

Understanding Digital Radiography (DDR): A Patient Overview

Digital Radiography (DDR) is a modern imaging technique that replaces traditional film-based X-rays with digital sensors to produce high-quality images of the body’s internal structures. This technology allows for faster image acquisition, enhanced clarity, and reduced radiation exposure—helping physicians diagnose a wide range of conditions with greater efficiency and accuracy.

Before Your Appointment

  • Preparation: Most digital X-ray exams do not require any special preparation. However, if you’re having an abdominal or pelvic X-ray, you may receive specific instructions ahead of time. Please follow any directions provided by your referring physician or imaging center staff.
  • Clothing: Wear loose, comfortable clothing that is free of metal fasteners, buttons, or zippers. You may be asked to change into a gown to ensure clear imaging, depending on the area being scanned.
  • Medical History: Be ready to share any relevant medical history, symptoms, or past surgeries with your technologist. Let them know if you are pregnant, may be pregnant, or have any implanted devices.

During the Procedure

  • What to Expect: You will be positioned by a trained technologist depending on the body part being imaged. The process is quick and painless. You may be asked to hold your breath briefly or remain still for a few seconds while each image is taken.
  • Time Required: Most digital X-ray exams take just a few minutes, although the entire appointment may last up to 20 minutes, depending on how many images are needed.
  • Comfort: Digital X-rays are noninvasive and typically well-tolerated. If you experience any discomfort while positioning, let the technologist know—they will do their best to keep you comfortable while ensuring accurate imaging.

After the Procedure

  • Review of Results: Your images will be reviewed by a radiologist, who will prepare a detailed report for your referring physician. Your doctor will follow up with you to explain the results and discuss any next steps in your care.
  • Resuming Normal Activities: You can return to your regular routine immediately after the exam unless otherwise instructed by your doctor.

Additional Information

  • Common Uses: Digital radiography is used to evaluate a wide range of medical concerns, including bone fractures and dislocations, joint abnormalities such as arthritis, chest conditions like pneumonia or lung masses, issues involving the digestive tract, and post-surgical follow-ups to assess the placement and condition of orthopedic hardware.
  • Safety: DDR uses a minimal dose of radiation, significantly lower than traditional film-based X-rays. Our equipment is regularly maintained and calibrated to ensure patient safety. If you are pregnant or suspect you may be, always inform the technologist before the exam.

Digital radiography is a safe, efficient, and highly effective diagnostic tool. Our imaging team is committed to providing a professional and comfortable experience. If you have questions about your upcoming X-ray or what to expect, please contact our office—we’re here to help.
